A Muslim Father’s Pertinent and Valuable Prescription for his children distressed by Donald Trump and Jihadi Terro

A Muslim Father’s Pertinent and Valuable Prescription
 For his Children
Distressed by Donald Trump and Jihadi Terrorism

These days the most burning topic for we Muslims is our reaction to the bloody rampage of ISIS and Al Qaeda and the outburst of Donald Trump. In this context there was an exchange of emails in our circle. I would like to share these two emails with you all.  It may help you to decide your line of thinking for the best Muslim approach. May be some of you may like to give us a feedback. After all, this is our common problem,

The first email was sent to some of the members of our Circle:

At the democratic debate on Saturday, one of the candidates, Martin O'Malley, mentioned this very touching statement by my nephew, Kashif Firozvi:

The other night, my kids asked me a difficult question about what they heard Trump say on TV. Despite our efforts to shield them from the news, they saw enough to be scared. Here is my letter to them.

My Dear Sons,
The other night, you both asked me something that I did not know how to answer. “Where are we going to go if Trump wins and he kicks us out of our home?” The truth is that, I never could imagine that this question would be asked of me in my country, in my lifetime, by my child. The United States of America is the only country we have ever known. It is our home. It is where you and I were born. It is the country your grandfather loved so much that he was proud to pay taxes because he couldn’t fight for this country on account of the tears in his kids. It is the country whose love and kindness was reminded to me every year when Grandma Braeckel sent me a birthday card and a 10 dollar bill from the time I was born, till the day she died 3 years ago. It is where we grew up loving all things Baltimore, especially the Terps, Orioles and Ravens. It is where I met your Mom and eventually proposed to her on Penn’s Landing, even though we already had our baat pakki (engagement) because I knew as an American, she deserved to experience being proposed to on one knee. It is the country whose national anthem, we salute and take our hats off to at O’s games while screaming “Oh” at that one Baltimore moment that the rest of the country can’t seem to understand. It is the country that gave me the chance to dream of being a philosopher, while studying to be a doctor. It is the medical school, whose Jesuit teachers taught the value of integrating faith into the practice of medicine in order to serve one’s fellow human being. It is the country that allowed a clueless person like your dad to build a small business through hard work, determination and the generous help of an old Jewish doctor. It is the country whose police officer came to our house in the middle of the night when our house was robbed and gave you the security to go back to sleep knowing that nothing bad could happen now because she was downstairs to protect us. It is the country whose teachers sparked the same love of learning in you that was ignited in me 30 years earlier. It is the country that taught both of us that when you shake another person’s hand, you do so with a firm grip and a sincere smile. It is the country whose leaders wanted to make sure that you had every opportunity to learn and practice your faith, so they closed school on Eid. It is the country whose citizens are so considerate that they don’t want to eat or drink anything in front of us when we are fasting out of fear that it might offend. It is the country whose leaders inspired the world by creating the Peace Corps to help improve the lives of others less fortunate, by building bridges of understanding and friendship. It is the country whose experiment with freedom and adherence to the most noble of ideals was embodied in a statue of a roman goddess welcoming immigrants from all over the world. It is the country that taught the rest of the world the meaning of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and reminded everyone that being American is an honor and a privilege that needs to be defended from both foreign and internal threats.

Today, there are those who would say that there is no room for Muslims in America. They would say the faith that has defined you, your family and friends is not compatible with being American. They would say the religion that inspires you to fast for a month in order to know the plight of those who have no food is somehow not compassionate. They would say that your reading the Quran that begins each chapter with praise of God as being Most Gracious and Merciful, somehow makes all of us selfish and cruel. They would say that the prayers of humility that we make to God each day are false and misdirected and should cause alarm for real Americans. When people say these ignorant comments laced with racism and misguided fear in order to get a few political points , remember, they don’t know you, they don’t know Islam and most of all, they don’t know America. The America they think they are preserving is not the America of our founding fathers and not the America that inspires the world. The loudest voice rarely ever speaks the truth. In a country that was founded on religious and personal freedom, your struggle to be Muslim makes you more American then those who would have you leave. They poison the country the claim to defend. By being true to your faith, we make America stronger. This is our home, our faith and our country. We aren’t leaving. This will be our struggle and our challenge. Don’t give up. The Soul of Our America is worth fighting for.
Love,
Your Proud American-Muslim Dad

I was really impressed by this statement. So I added my comments in an email to my group:

AoA  Beti

This letter from a learned caring father to his loving children is simply fantastic; just beautiful; stunning in it’s substance and gorgeous in it’s style. It is unusually delightful to read because it is completely free of any bickering or polemics: “you said this, but you said that, no she said it, yes he made her do that etc.” A very profound message is conveyed calmly and clearly in this letter; a message that shows that the Kashif has balanced very harmoniously his dual American/Muslim identity. This should be a message for all of us in our circle. He has expressed with emphasis his appreciation and gratitude for his American identity while defending with equal force his Muslim obligations. If we want our children, grand children and great grand children to have a comfortable future, all in our circle — vocal, very vocal and silent —must seriously ponder over these thoughts in this letter. On the other hand if we continue in our present trend of strong emotional and therefore irrational attachment to our Muslim half of identity leaving only lip service for the American half, we will be surely a great support for likes of Ben Carson and Ted Cruz.

As for the Trump phenomenon. K (one of the sisters) had said very nicely in one of our meetings “Trump is the best thing to happen to us Muslims”. There is a huge outcry in the country to defend us. The whole leadership across party lines blasted Trump for his suggestion to bar Muslims from our country. He is rally a paradox. Despite his domination, as yet as a front runner for the Republican Primaries, most of the reliable analysts and commentators do not seem to take him seriously. Allah Hafiz

With kind regards
     Uncle

ABSTRACT

“O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of God is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And God has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).”

This short, sweet and melodious ayah, in fact is defining four cardinal Truths in our life.
Allah Ta’aala Subhanahoo declares in this verse that all mankind has descended from a single pair of man and woman. The article calls it a historic declaration and discusses its implications. Next, Allah Ta’aala announces in this verse that HE has divided mankind into “shaooban wa qabaaila” i.e. nations, tribes, races and sub-tribes of all sizes. Why, why has HE done this? HE HIMSELF provides the answer immediately following this declaration in just one word: le ta’aarafoo” i.e. to know one another. What is the significance and import of this? You will find the answer in the story that follows. The verse then goes on to declare a fundamental and paramount principle which if obeyed can have a profound effect on the behavior of human society. It suggests that “the only basis of superiority and excellence that there is, or can be, between man and man is that of moral excellence”. Allah Ta’aala declares in this ayah “inna akramakum” i.e. the noblest/honorable amongst you “inda Al-lahi i.e. with or in the sight of Allah is “atqakum” i.e. who has Al-Taqwaa among you. The implications, specially of the word Al-Taqwaa are discussed hereunder. Several examples of the  sunnah of our Holy Prophet are quoted in support. Has the Ummah followed these golden principles? Read on. In the case of marriage, the importance that Islamic law gives to kufv (likeness of status) is brought up. The verse ends with inna Allaha i.e. indeed Allah is  Aleemun i.e. all knowing khabeer i.e. all aware/well acquainted/all cognizant. This is sort of a common epilogue to many verses and delivers a strong message. What is the sanction against the various injunctions of Allah Ta’aala? There is no police to arrest us; no jury and judge to try us. This part of the verse warns us that the only agency that will compel us to comply with the injunctions of the Holy Quran is our complete Faith (taqwaa) that HE is “all Knowing and well Acquainted” with even an “iota” of information about us. No vigilante needed.

PRELUDE
From the Pen and Perspective of a self-styled PPK Muslim (Proud, Practicing, Knowledgeable) with a humble submission that Islam totally rejects Blind Following BUT vigorously focusses on the Limitations of Pure Human Reasoning..............and clearly and comprehensively AlLAH knows best.

In the beginning of the seventh century C.E., the folks of Mecca and Medina had a fascinatingly unique window: they had direct access to the Heavens through one of their own. They were blessed with a regular stream of Divine counseling and guidelines. Question and answer sessions were part of the program. Even individual questioner was graced by an answer. In the short Introduction to this scheme they were assured that at the end of this twenty-two year project, Divine Directions and Admonitions will continue through the agency of the PEN. The whole discourse has been preserved and archived till eternity under the guarantee of our Lord and Creator. This record in known as the Quran.

It should sound unbelievable but factually appears to be true: Many of our prevalent, widespread and important concepts and opinions about religious matters do not have a basis in the Quran and sometimes even appear to be in obvious conflict with the teachings of the Quran. It would be very educative and helpful to discuss an Ayah once a month to see if it supports or rejects our views and actions in our daily life. I wish and hope this email generates a fruitful interactive discussion.

DUAA’
بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمٰنِ الرَّحيمِ

In the name of Allah, we praise HIM, seek HIS help and ask for HIS forgiveness. Whosoever Allah guideth none can misguide; whosoever HE allows to fall astray, none can guide him right. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah alone and we bear witness that Mohammed, SAW is HIS slave-servant and the Seal of HIS Messengers.
Further, we recall that Allah Ta’aala has declared in HIS Book1 “He granteth wisdom to whom He pleaseth; and he to whom wisdom is granted receiveth indeed a benefit overflowing; but none will grasp the Message (or remember or receive admonition) but men of understanding (or intellect)” and we also recall that he has warned us about the day of judgement2 “Then on that day you shall most certainly be questioned about the boons (joy, pleasure).” We realise, that there cannot be a greater boon or blessing or benefit than wisdom and we wonder if this should be a timely reminder to very many of us sincere and practicing Muslims who use our critical thinking to enhance the mundane for ourselves and our families but resort to compulsory following -- taqleed, doctrine of classical Sunni Islamic Fiqh  -- in matters religion.

(NOTE:  I have filtered out the proofs and details into the Footnotes for those who have the time and interest for them. The main email will then be reasonable length, hopefully for the busy majority. What follows is not a sermon; I do not feel qualified to give one, anyhow. I wish, it may provide a food for thought. A caveat seems in order: If the ayah selected pertains to issues we face in our daily life with our family, friends, neighbours or peers it may affect us personally and lead to some self analysis and soul searching which in turn could be divisive and distressing. If taken in the right spirit, it can be a humble attempt towards finding the “straight path”.)

THE AYAH

Surah Al-Hujurat 49, Ayah 13
“O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of God is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And God has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).”

A SHORT VERSION

“I am convinced about the veracity of my opinions, but I do consider it likely that they may turn out to be incorrect. Likewise, I am convinced about the incorrectness of the views different from mine, but I do concede the possibility that they may turn out to be correct.” Imam Shafa’i
As per the trend of last two months, we continue to discuss the ehkaamaat, the Commandments of our Shariah.
Let us start with the Shan-e-Nuzool………..(Please see the main story)

This short, sweet and melodious ayah, in fact is defining four cardinal Truths in our life.

Allah Ta’aala Subhanahoo declares in this verse that all mankind has descended from a single pair of man and woman. Out goes the Darwinian theory of “the origin of Man”. …………..This ayah makes the historic declaration that we all have the same Father and same Mother. "We have created every one of you out of a father and a mother"
(Zamakhsharl, Razi, Baydiwi). It implies that this equality of biological origin will be reflected in the equality of the human dignity. The whole humanity is one family of brothers and sisters. “Know that all belong to one human family, without any inherent superiority of one over another” (Zamakhshari)…….. Mufti Mohammed Shafi contributes in his own forceful style:……..

Next, Allah Ta’aala announces in this verse that HE has divided mankind into “shaooban wa qabaaila” i.e. nations, tribes, races and sub-tribes of all sizes. Why, why has HE done this? HE HIMSELF provides the answer immediately following this declaration in just one word: “le ta’aarafoo” i.e. to know one another. In other words these are just convenient labels for identification. It will enable us to recognise different parts and  sections of humanity scattered all over the globe. Before God they are all one. Dr. Asad explains beautifully………Our Holy Prophet also has elaborated on this issue.,,,,,,,

The verse then goes on to declare a fundamental and paramount principle which if obeyed can have a profound effect on the behavior of human society. It suggests that “the only basis of superiority and excellence that there is, or can be, between man and man is that of moral excellence”. Allah Ta’aala declares in this ayah “inna akramakum” i.e. the noblest/honorable amongst you “inda Allahi” i.e. with or in the sight of Allah is “atqakum” i.e. who has Al-Taqwaa among you. The narrow and literal meaning of this word taqwaa is fear; it has a much broader meaning, though. In this verse it has been variously translated as “righteous , most pious, one of the muttuqun, the best in conduct, most careful (of his duty)”. The best translation and explanation of the word “taqwaa” in my reading is “God consciousness”; to be aware of HIS presence at every moment, with each breath and at every spot. Can you imagine the revolution it can bring in human behavior and attitude if every one of us is fully convinced that all of us are accountable to him, all the time and for all our actions - big or small - at all the places : home, office, entertainment, parties and certainly at our political discussions…….…Any how, this verse declares that Taqwa of Allah Ta’aala is the only road to Honour. Reference to one’s lineage serves the purpose of identification but is no source of pride and conceit……..
These truths have been further elaborated by the sunnah of our beloved Prophet:

On completing the tawaaf after the conquest of Makkah he said: 'Thank God Who has removed from you the blemish of ignorance and its arrogance. O people, men are divided into classes: the pious and righteous, who arc honorable in the sight of Allah, and the sinful and vicious, who arc contemptible in the sight of Allah, whereas all men are the children of Adam and Adam had been created by Allah from clay." (Baihaqi, Tirmidhi)

Two years later at the Farewell Pilgrimage, he announced:……….
Some other interesting ahaadith on the same subject from different angles:…..
I would love to agree with Maulana Maudoodi when he says:
“These teachings have not remained confined to words only but Islam has practically established a universal brotherhood of the believers on the basis, which does not allow any distinction …………

A minor but important issue. It is a common practice to compare the worldly status of the persons concerned during a marriage proposal. Is it right? I will allow Maulana Maudoodi to inform us on this issue: ……..

The verse ends with inna Allaha i.e. i.e. indeed Allah is  Aleemun i.e. all knowing khabeer i.e. all aware/well acquainted/all cognizant. This is sort of a common epilogue to many verses and delivers a strong message. What is the sanction against the various injunctions of Allah Ta’aala? This part of the verse warns us that the only agency that will compel us to comply with the injunctions of the Holy Quran is our complete Faith (taqwaa) that HE is “all Knowing and well Acquainted” with even an “iota” of information about us. THE MAIN STORY

As a matter of fact the index ayah is serially following the past two.

Let us start with the Shan-e-Nuzool - Circumstances of Revelation. This verse was revealed on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah. When it was time for prayer, the Holy Prophet asked Sayyidna Bilal to call the adhan. One of the pagan Quraish cynically remarked “Thank God that my father died before this happened, and he did not
have to see this bad day”. Harith Ibn Hisham remarked: Could Muhammad not find anyone better than this black crow to sound the adhan in the Sacred Mosque! Abu  Sufyan said: I do not wish to utter anything for fear that the master of the heavens will inform him. Thus, Jibra'il  came down and informed the Holy Prophet  about this conversation. The Holy Prophet called them and asked them about it. They admitted. At this, the current verse was revealed.

Please note that the ayah is addressing the people as “O Men, O Mankind, human beings” and not the usual “O those who believe”. This is the Divine style when the issue addressed concerns the whole mankind. Yousuf Ali introduces an interesting nuance when he says “though it is understood that in a perfected world the two (i.e. all mankind and Muslim brotherhood) would be synonymous.”

This short, sweet and melodious ayah, in fact is defining four cardinal Truths in our life.

Allah Ta’aala Subhanahoo declares in this verse that all mankind has descended from a single pair of man and woman. Out goes the Darwinian theory of “the origin of Man”. All the monotheistic religions are unanimous in upholding the theory of Creation. If it is realized that one cosmic day according to the Holy Quran is equal to fifty thousand years of human calculations and that a day mentioned in our Holy Book could refer to an epoch, it would be easier to understand the various human theories about the creation of the Universe. The Quran has discussed this topic on different occasions. We will dwell upon them later on, Insha Allah. This ayah makes the historic declaration that we all have the same Father and same Mother. "We have created every one of you out of a father and a mother" (Zamakhsharl, Razi, Baydiwi). It implies that this equality of biological origin will be reflected in the equality of the human dignity. The whole humanity is one family of brothers and sisters. “Know that all belong to one human family, without any inherent superiority of one over another” (Zamakhshari).
The current verse sets down the basis of an “all-comprehensive and all-pervading” principle of human equality. All men have been created from a single male (Adam) and a single female (Hawwa’). All people are the descendants of Adam and Hawwa’ and therefore equal in the sight of Allah. The planet would be a very peaceful and pleasant place to live if humans can rise to the standards proposed by our Creator. Unfortunately we have failed miserably and have created hell on earth. No wonder, the Holy Text has declared that man is very quarrel some. Mufti Mohammed Shafi contributes in his own forceful style: “No one is allowed to take pride nor to degrade others on the basis
of pigment of his skin, the amount of wealth he possesses or by his rank or by his social status, descent or pedigree, but by his moral uprightness and the way he discharges his obligations to Allah and man. The entire human race is but one family. Division into nations, tribes and sub-tribes of all sizes, and races is meant only to give a better identification of one another.”

Dr. Asad explains beautifully “In other words, men's evolution into "nations and tribes" is meant to foster rather than to diminish their mutual desire to understand and appreciate the essential human oneness underlying their outward differentiations”. This division of  the human communities into nations and tribes is the natural way of cooperation and distinction between them. The different components — fatuity, a brotherhood, a tribe, a nation — can combine and co-operate to produce a vibrant society. Apart from being natural, it is  harmless, practical and an essential step. Unfortunately man has completely mutilated this noble aim into a perpetual, violent and bloody divide and discord on national, ethnic, racial, color, language, sectarian and religious grounds. This natural difference has been transformed into  distinctions of inequality, of high and low, of noble and mean.Unfortunately the “Ummah” is not behind if not in the forefront in this ugly and nasty exercise. We have seen the final culmination of this trend in the two horrible world wars. Apart from the massive destruction all round, the World War Two accounted for the death of forty eight million lives.

Our Holy Prophet also has elaborated on this issue. On learning  of people's boasting of their national or tribal past, he said: "Behold, God has removed from you the arrogance of pagan ignorance (jahiliyyah) with its boast of ancestral glories. Man is but a God-conscious believer or an unfortunate sinner. All people are children of Adam, and Adam was created out of dust." (Tirmidhi and Abu Da'ud, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah.)

Can you imagine the revolution it can bring in human behavior and attitude if every one of us is fully convinced that all of us are accountable to him, all the time and for all our actions - big or small - at all the places : home, office, entertainment, parties and certainly at our political discussions. If I make a statement that America is a country that has killed most humans, do I realise that this statement will be part of my report in the Highest Court and I will have to defend it on Islamic values and not tribal values. Any how, this verse declares that Taqwa of Allah Ta’aala is the only road to Honour. Reference to one’s lineage serves the purpose of identification but is no source of pride and conceit. By the way, the immediate application of this verse was to Sayyidna Bilal, whom the Holy Prophet defended in front of  people: "You are empty (i.e. you have no moral leg to stand on).  Bilal on the other hand, is equipped (with high moral qualities) and he is better and more honorable than any of you.” (Baghawi as cited by Mazhari)

Two years later at the Farewell Pilgrimage, he announced: “O people, be aware: your God is One. No Arab has any superiority over a non-Arab, and no non-Arab any superiority over an Arab, and no white one has any superiority over a black one, and no black one any superiority over a white one, except on the basis of taqwaa (piety). The most honorable among you in the sight, of Allah is he who is the most pious and righteous of you. Say if I have conveyed the Message to you?" And the great congregation of the people responded, saying: Yes, you have, O Messenger of Allah." Thereupon the Holy Prophet said: "Then let the one who is present convey it to those who are absent," ( Baihaqi

Some other interesting ahaadith on the same subject from different angles:
"You are all the children of Adam, and Adam was created from the dust. Let the people give up boasting of their ancestors, otherwise they will stand more degraded than a mean insect in the sight of Allah." ( Bazzar
"Allah will not enquire about your lineage on the Day of Resurrection. The most honorable in the sight of Allah is he who is most pious. "(Ibn Jarir)
"Allah does not see your outward appearances and your possessions ,but He sees your hearts and your deeds." (Muslim, lbn Majah)

I would love to agree with Maulana Maudoodi when he says:
“These teachings have not remained confined to words only but Islam has practically established a universal brotherhood of the believers on the basis, which does not allow any distinction on account of color, race, language, country and nationality which is free from every concept of high and low, clean and unclean, mean and respectable, which admits all human beings with equal rights, whether they belong to any race and nation, any land or region. Even the opponents of Islam have had to admit that no precedent is found in any religion and any system of the success with which the principle of human equality and unity has been given practical shape in the Muslim society, nor has it ever been found. Islam is the only religion which has welded and combined innumerable races and communities scattered in all corners of the earth into one universal Ummah.” While there were periods in our history to bolster this claim, on the whole however and over centuries the Ummah has only given lip service to these golden principles in the masaajid, lectures, conferences and conventions. On the ground - in politics, finances, battle field, interaction with other Faiths and Nations - we have deliberately and persistently distorted, defied and abandoned these golden principles of Islam. I must hasten to add, it will be a great pleasure and delight to be proved wrong in my assessment.

A minor but important issue. It is a common practice to compare the worldly status of the persons concerned during a marriage proposal. Is it right? I will allow Maulana Maudoodi to inform us on this issue: “In this connection, a misunderstanding also needs to be removed. In the case of marriage, the importance that Islamic law gives to kufv (likeness of status) has been taken by some people in the sense that some brotherhoods are noble and some mean, and matrimonial relations between them are objectionable. But this, in fact, is a wrong idea. According to the Islamic law, every Muslim man can marry every Muslim woman, but the success of the matrimonial life depends on maximum harmony and conformity between the spouses as regards habits, characteristics and ways of life, family traditions and economic and social status, so that they may get on well with each other. This is the real object of being equal and alike. Where there is unusual difference and disparity between the man and the woman in this regard, lifelong companionship will be difficult. That is why the Islamic law disapproves of such intermarriages, and not for the reason that one of the spouses is noble and the other mean, but for the reason that in case there is a clear and apparent difference and distention in status, there would be a greater possibility of the failure of the matrimonial life if the marriage relationship was established.” Maulana has restricted his comments to “intermarriages”. I feel these are relevant and applicable across the board to all marriages.

There is no police to arrest us; no jury and judge to try us. This part of the verse warns us that the only agency that will compel us to comply with the injunctions of the Holy Quran is our complete Faith (taqwaa) that HE is “all Knowing and well Acquainted” with even an “iota” of information about us. No vigilante needed.

The Editor Saudi Gazette on the Mass Shootings in Paris and California:
"I will not Apologize."
How should Muslims Respond?

Editor-at-large of The Saudi Gazete has to be a very well informed and knowledgable person. I respect that. But my Deen and my education has encouraged independent thinking. Hence I beg to differ from his excellent write up “I will not apologise” in response to the mass shootings in Paris and California.(A copy enclosed hereunder) I immediately agree. You do not have to apologise; certainly not. I do not have to, either. He does not have to. She does not have to. No Muslim has to because, as the writer has stated these episodes have nothing to do with Islam. And we do not need to prove this to anybody. Those who ask us for an apology are just being ridiculous.

But we have a duty and an interest to condemn these dastardly attacks unconditionally. It is our duty as human being as these are attacks against humanity, duty as Americans because our fellow citizens are being brutally murdered by other fellow citizens and as Muslims because this carnage is conducted by terribly misguided Muslims as their distorted version of service of Islam.

The article does have a line to strongly condemn these atrocities: “I stand with the entire world in condemning the wanton, ruthless and mindless destruction of innocent human lives”. The rest of the editorial is devoted to bring out very nicely and forcefully a list of grievances that we have against “them” — the West. After affirming that he does not believe in conspiracies, the Editor states “…..but are mostly managed by shadowy groups operating under the umbrella of Western agencies.” The “Ummah” of our dreams is illiterate, week, fractious and therefore impotent in the world arena. We seem to have completely lost the capability of self analysis, self assessment. The usual stereotype of our reaction is something like this: we are OK; it is the vicious and cunning West that is responsible for all our misery and mishaps. Since we cannot match them the only two weapons we have in our armory are taking shelter in a state of denial or throwing the ball in the court of “the West or the Western agencies”. A majority of my fellow Muslims support and follow this line of thinking and approach in our political, social. and economic confrontations with the current dominant force, the West. Hence I will not discuss it further except pointing out that they are acting as members of the “Tribe of Muslims” and practicing the age old tribal values. The truth is that Ummah or Community of Faith should be bound by Spirituality and Spiritual values.

I will strongly suggest to deal with our current problem of mass shootings as Muslims who are members of the “Deen of Islam” and not the “Tribe of Muslims”. These are two distinct classes. Bernard Shaw had famously said that “Islam is the best religion but has the worst followers”. Near at home, the poet philosopher Dr. Mohammed Iqbal saw Islam in Europe but no Muslims; on returning home in India he saw many Muslims but could not find  Islam. As members of the former class “Deen of Islam” our approach on the problem under discussion will then have to deviate from the stereotype followed in this article. We will have to first select some of the golden principles of our Deen to guide us in this matter. First and foremost is Taqwaa —God consciousness. Yes, you read it right. This core value of Islam is the basic first step to keep us “on the right path” in real situations like the mass shooting we are discussing. Members of the “Tribe of Muslims” restrict this concept —taqwaa — to discussions in our lectures, da’waa, halaqua and conferences. Allah Ta’aala and HIS Messenger want it — taqwaa — to be manifested in our daily dealings on the ground. We must be fully conscious that what we feel, say and do about the Paris and San Bernardino massacre will be accountable on the Day of Judgement. This principle can never be overemphasized. As our Holy Book emphasizes an “iota” of “good or bad” done in our life in this world will be “seen” and accounted in the other world. Second principle, we must remind ourselves that the murder of a single human being is a murder of whole mankind. Third, Islam permits Qisas only on one to one basis; the guilty for the victim. Fourth fairness and justice is ordained to us even for our enemies. With these principles in mind, build up your response to these mass shootings. It appears it has to be an outright condemnation with out any ifs and buts. As a Muslim, I dare not relate in any way —correlate, explain, offer a basis, partly justify — these mass murders in Paris and California to the horrible and recurrent killings of my brothers and sisters in Palestine. I am afraid this attempt at relating the two can be labelled as a major sin, a gunahe kabeera as it runs counter to clear instructions of our Holy Text as outlined earlier.

"Fear Ignorance, Not Muslims" says the Editorial Board of New York Times

"Fear Ignorance, Not Muslims"
Says the Editorial Board of New York Times

“Fear Ignorance, Not Muslims” is the courageous declaration of the Editorial Board of the New York Times. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/05/opinion/fear-ignorance-not-muslims.html?emc=edit_th_20151205&nl=todaysheadlines&nlid=64792905. It states among other things that “Americans must guard against overreaction, and subdue the panicked reflex of distrust and hatred toward the Americans among us who are Muslims” … …..today the ignorance is being inflamed by know-nothings in the political sphere ……….Chief Downing said law enforcement needs the trust and cooperation of the majority of Muslims in the mainstream………but murderous gun rampages, an everyday occurrence in the United States, have been set off by workplace resentments, anti-abortion and anti-government zealotry, paranoia, suicidal megalomania, various other forms of sociopathy, and by no evident reasons at all”. The Board concludes “There is nothing wise — particularly from a law-enforcement and security perspective — about the urge to isolate and stigmatize Americans of any faith or heritage.”

Apart from this bold editorial of the New York Times, other prominent leaders including our President and past Secretary Hilary Clinton have come out very forcefully and clearly to dissociate ISIS and its activities from Muslims and Islam. It is our duty now and in our interest to support these leaders by our words and deeds.

We Muslims should respond responsibly and positively. Let us not go on the defensive mode after the San Bernardino massacre and shut ourselves into a state of denial ascribing whatever happened to the “CIA and the Zionist lobby”. I have already received an email from a group casting doubts about the tragic incident.

The first step is unqualified and unequivocal denunciation of ISIS following the lead of ISNA which has announced that “They are thugs and killers, part of a cult of death”. This should not be coupled with reference to Islamophobia or other genuine grievances that we have. This is not the occasion for it. Also it may sound as some sort of justification for the horrible atrocity.

Are we doing this? Does ISNA, quoted above represents the view of the consensus of Muslim Americans? I am afraid, I am not really sure. We Muslims have a long long list of genuine or perceived grievances against “them”, the “West” the “Americans”. It can be traced centuries back to the era of Western imperialism and colonialism. In our times it is primarily based on American Foreign Policy. As a Super Power, US has and will continue to come into conflict with many Muslim countries. We do not like it, rather hate it. The worst irritation to us is the persistent, unfair and blind support of US for the state of Israel to the detriment of the suffering of the beleaguered Palestinians. Here is the catch, though. We knew all this in our own countries before we decided to move over to US. Yet we were very keen and successful to come to this country, got educated here, got a job here with a successful comfortable life, grew up our children in healthy, liberal atmosphere with quality education. Applied and got citizenship of this country; took oath to be loyal to the Flag and the Constitution. The consequence is very natural. A dichotomy in our personality; a state of love and hate with our new country and identity. I am afraid this is responsible for a sense of inner and suppressed antipathy and animosity against “them, the West, US” in favour of the “Ummah”. So much so that many many of us have some sort of sympathy even for bodies like ISIS who bring nothing but disgrace and shame to our beautiful religion. Time and again, in discussions and articles “islamophobia” and the American behavior with Muslims in some part of the world is referred to when discussing the Paris or California attack. The underlying message is to dilute/explain/correlate/diminish/partly justify the horrors committed by ISIS.
Our competition and confrontation with the people of the Book started right at the birth of Islam. Initially we had the upper hand. We were powerful. We spread out, conquered and built a formidable empire. Intellectual stagnation followed. We were vanquished and governed. Since then the relationship between the two peoples has elements — slight, strong sometimes, very strong occasionally —- of fear and hate i.e. “phobia” for each other. Hence the talk of a “clash of civilizations”. I grew up listening to our Maulvis refer to the West as kuffars. It is a very wide spread belief amongst us that we cannot be friendly and social with the Christians and Jews based on very wrong interpretations of some ayahs of our Holy Text. However, the Holy Quran clearly and strictly orders us to be Fair and Just even to our enemies. Since it is a Devine injunction, it will be haram for a Muslim not to do so; not to be fair and just in all  his/her dealings. I therefore suggest that the “Islamophobia” most of us often refer to is in fact a reciprocal phobia among the three cousins of the Abrahamic Faith.

However there is a great surge in this sentiment of phobia since the turn of the twenty first century. I would like to call it “Muslimophobia”. This is a new phenomena and a reaction to entirely new circumstances and therefore needs and entirely different type of approach from the age old “Islamophobia”. Terrorism is known for centuries in human history. However 9/11 gave it entirely different dimensions. Al Qaeda made it global and effective (This brings in another problem; many Muslims have reasons to refuse this story of Al Qaeda etc. We will deal with this issue at some other time. Bear with me in the meantime). Now ISIS has taken it to perfection. Its methods proved be too cruel and gruesome even for Al Qaeda. It is the first time that a terrorist organization has a significant territory under its control. It has succeeded in reaching the minds and hearts of individuals by its mastery of modern technology — social media, video messages, attractive and instructive websites — and unabashed brutality and barbarity. The lasting psychological and emotional impact on lots and lots of people, Europeans and Americans of all Faiths cannot be over emphasized. More importantly, ISIS has gone out of the way to bring out and emphasize that this is an Islamic movement and aims at restoring the glory of past Islam. It has usurped the label of Caliphate, has a self styled Leader of the Faithful, has our Shahada on its black flag and embarks on their nefarious actions with our most inspiring slogan of Allah-o-Akbar. It is quite natural therefore that ISIS has produced a lot of fear and hate i.e. phobia in Europe and America against the Western Muslims in their midst. Just as we do not want the non-Muslims to implicate Islam and all Muslims in the activities of ISIS, we should not think it is Islam when they, Europeans and Americans express fear and hate as a result of  the activities of ISIS. Hence the highly intensified and vocalized phobia of the twenty first century against the Muslims in Europe and US is a fear of Muslim fellow citizens triggered by ISIS — a Muslimophobia. It is not a continuation of the mutual phobia that the the three Abrahamic faiths have been displaying with one another over the centuries. I feel this is a very important differentiation. Only on realizing this distinction, we can condemn ISIS completely and wholeheartedly without referring to our previous differences and grievances.

Our Deen is a very balanced religion and demands a strict sense of proportion from its followers. Are we matching up to the standards expected by Islam in the problem under discussion. Let us see, if the action and the reaction are commensurate?  Compare the intensity and magnitude of the activities of the ISIS with the attitude of Americans and Europeans against us; the massacre of fourteen innocent lives and wounding of twenty one in a holiday party by their peer of five years against the shooting through the Quran, sneers and sarcasm, threatening calls and vandalizing mosques by the Americans. Secondly, h ave we noted the very clear rejection of this negative reaction by the leadership of the country, almost across the board. To clarify my point, let us change the playing field: killing of Muslims by non-Muslims in a Muslim majority country. Can you imagine the reaction if a single Muslim is killed by a non-Muslim under these circumstances? If you have any doubts let me give you an example. It is Malaysia, a moderate Muslim majority country. Christians are a minority but form forty per cent of the population. A few years ago, the Muslims objected to the use of the word “Allah” in Churches and demanded that the practice be stopped henceforth. By the way from the Islamic point of view it is a totally un-Islamic demand. The word Allah was used by pagans of Arabia much before the advent of Islam. Moreover our Holy Text clearly states to the un-believers that it is no use quibbling over the word Allah for HE is our God and your God. Anyhow this is not the only occasion when Muslims of our age act against the clear dictates of the Holy Quran. To continue the story, the government of the time supported the demand. Christians had to give in. But they appealed to the Supreme Court. After two years of deliberations, the Court delivered a decision upholding the right of Christians to use the word of Allah in their Churches. This was the action, perfectly justified and democratic, you will agree. Now note the reaction of Muslims in a Muslim majority country against a minority of forty per cent. Next day there were bomb attacks in six churches. Any action against the miscreants? None. Any condemnation by any leader or Muslim scholar? None reported in the source I have read.  Here is the master stroke. The Prime Minister of the time is on record, when interviewed on TV (I heard the recording) trivializing the rampage as  “….these are emotional issues”!

A couple of related issues need discussion. Insha Allah at a later date.
